Orthopedic physicians show reduced episode costs with defined clinical care pathways

A recent study, “Physicians with Defined Clear Care Pathways have Better Discharge Disposition and Lower Cost“, published in the Journal of Arthroplasty with John Tessier, Gerald Rupp, and Jim Gera from Signature Medical Group as co-authors, highlights the importance of defined post-acute care pathways for treatment of Medicare patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty.

For physician groups implementing defined clinical care pathways compared to groups without defined pathways:

  • Episode costs were $3,189 less for elective hip arthroplasty
  • Elective knee arthroplasty episode costs were $2,466 less
  • Post-acute care utilization reductions were between 7 percent to 79 percent
  • Incident rate reductions ranged from 44 percent to 79 percent
